Wisdom

Strive not for victory, but for the end of fight.

1000-mile journey starts with just one step.

Only fight with yourself leads to perfect victory.

Controling oneself needs huge power.

The water may flow slowly or strike violently.

Who beats others is only strong.

You can only if you think you can!

It's better to fight than to run away and die tired.

To know oneself means to be enlightened.

Do not believe in anything unless it's consistent with your common sense.

Teachers open the doors but you have to get through them by yourself.

Above all else, you must find your own way.

If one does not begin with a right attitude, there is little hope for a right ending.

Truth and Peace are to be found within oneself, and not gained from another.

He who knows others is wise. He who knows himself is enlightened.

The wise man seeks everything in himself;
The ignorant man tries to get everything from somebody else.
He who puts forth his strength and keeps back his weakness,
is like a deep river into which all the streams flow.
His virtues shall increase until once again he is a pure as in childhood.

The perfect way is only difficult for those who pick and choose.
Do not like, do not dislike; all will then be clear.
Make a hairbreath difference and heaven and earth are set apart;
If you want the truth to stand clear before you, never be for or against.
The struggle between "for" and "against" is the minds worst disease.

Remembering is for those who have forgotten.

If happiness is in your destiny, you need not be in a hurry.

To overcome pride, be humble.
To overcome hate, be loving.
To overcome selfishness, be generous.
To overcome excitement, be calm.
To overcome ignorance, use knowledge.
To overcome evil, be good.
To overcome restlessness, meditate.
Finding peace in meditation, you shall find all things that you craved.

Learning

Art calls for complete mastery of techniques, developed by reflection within the soul.

He who thinks, but does not learn...is lost.
He who learns, but does not think...is in great danger.

The truth in combat is different for each individual in his style.
1. Research your own experience for the truth.
2. Absorb what is useful.
3. Reject what is useless.
4. Add specifically what is your own.

If you think you're the best, your growth will be mediocre,
If you think you're mediocre, you will always be at your best.

The three stages of learning:
Learn - to consciously learn a technique.
Apply - to practice the technique until you can successfully apply it.
Dissolve - when the technique becomes automatically a part of you.

When an archer is shooting for nothing...he has all his skill. If he shoots for a brass buckle...he is already nervous. If he shoots for a prize of gold...he goes blind, or sees two targets - he is out of his mind!
His skill has not changed but the prize divides him, he cares - He thinks more of winning than shooting, and the need to win drains him of power.

Shall I teach you what knowledge is?
When you know a thing, is to recognize that you know it.
When you don't know a thing, is to recognize that you don't know it.
This is Knowledge!

Ten thousand rivers flow into the sea;
The sea is never full.

Learning coordination is a matter of training the nervous system,
And not a question of training muscles.

The outstanding characteristic of the expert athlete is his ease of movement,
Even during maximum effort.

Before I studied the art,
A punch to me was just a punch, a kick was just a kick.
After I'd studied the art,
A punch was no longer a punch, a kick no longer a kick.
Now that I understanding the art,
A punch is just a punch, a kick is just a kick.

Honour

Those who know Honor,
but practise Humility
Will be as a valley,
receiving all the world into it.

Pride leads only to shame,
it is wise to be humble.

It is better to be humble and be with those who suffer,
than to cause pain and be with the proud.

As water reflects your face,
so your mind shows what kind of person you are.

Mistakes are the mother of learning.

Never take words too literally; they are but shadows of the truth. They transmit only a dim idea of the true meaning behind them.

Training

Skill is best acquired by learning accuracy and precision first,
Before the skill act is attempted with much speed and power.

The mastery of proper fundamentals and their progressive application,
Is the secret of being a great fighter.

One trains neither for self or others - in true training,
One trains for training's sake.

  1. When an archer is shooting for nothing...he has all his skill. If he shoots for a brass buckle...he is already nervous. If he shoots for a prize of gold...he goes blind, or sees two targets - he is out of his mind!

    Brilliant.

  3. Some more words of wisdom, by the martial arts master himself:

    :: Bruce Lee ::

"Absorb what is useful, Discard what is not, Add what is uniquely your own"

"Knowing is not enough; we must apply. Willing is not enough; we must do."

"Simplicity is the last step of art."

"A teacher is never a giver of truth - he is a guide, a pointer to the truth that each student must find for himself. A good teacher is merely a catalyst."

When an opportunity in a fight presents itself, "I" don't hit, "it" hits all by itself.

"Empty your mind. Become formless and shapeless like water. When water is poured into a cup, it becomes the cup. When water is poured into a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Be water, my friend."

"To know oneself is to study oneself in action with another person. If you want to understand the truth in martial arts, to see any opponent clearly, you must throw away the notion of styles or schools, prejudices, likes and dislikes, and so forth. Then, your mind will cease all conflict and come to rest. In this silence, you will see totally and freshly."

"I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times."

"The key to immortality is first living a life worth remembering."

"Don't think, feel! It is like a finger pointing away to the moon. Don't concentrate on the finger or you will miss all that heavenly glory."

"A quick temper will make a fool of you soon enough."

"I don't believe in different ways of fighting now, I mean, unless human beings have 3 arms and 3 legs - then we will have a different way of fighting. But basically we all have two arms and two legs so that is why I believe there should be only one way of fighting and that is no way."
